The click-and-mortar campus bookstore has a tremendous competitive advantage in the campus marketplace, namely its ability to support online textbook and merchandise offerings with brick-and-mortar service.
A geography textbook for $70? Biology 100 costs an extra hundred bucks in book fees, and you can't even sell back the book? And don't even think about upper level classes: one book, not even hardcover, that costs almost $80?
By now you have either just finished rush or it will be upon you shortly. Every bookstore person I know lives for rush. With a great deal of confidence, I can say that you would never go into a rush season without being fully prepared.
Though we were the only "college bookstore buying group" in attendance, our friends from NACS attended and conducted their annual survey. As usual, both Follett and Barnes & Noble were in attendance, wining, dining and schmoozing with as many of the NACUBO members as possible.
At Connect2One we are very serious about the issue of helping stores stay institutional/self-op. In recent weeks I have had numerous discussions with store managers regarding outsourcing. Is it picking up, is it slowing down, what is the trend?
